About this work
A wide sky of billowing clouds dominates the canvas, its center erupting in orange and gold where the sun appears to break through. Below, a dark band of water or land mirrors the same fiery colors in softened, streaked reflection, with a faint pale structure suggested at the left horizon.
Paint is dragged and layered with a palette knife, so clouds and light dissolve into broad, textured masses of orange, red, violet and pearl-grey rather than defined forms. The heavy impasto catches real light across its ridges, and the loose, almost abstract handling gives the scene an intense, radiant energy.
