About this work
A large golden pheasant with an iridescent blue-green head and long banded tail walks through a patch of dandelions and thistles in the foreground. A second, smaller pheasant stands further back to the right. Behind them a dense, fantastical old-town skyline of steep-roofed, spired houses rises under a warm sky dotted with a few small stars.
Warm ochres, browns and deep teal-greens in the bird's plumage are built up with thick, energetic brushstrokes, echoed in the loosely dabbed rooftops behind. The textured, folk-tale-like handling of the townscape and glowing seed-heads gives the painting a lively, playful charm.
