About this work

Warm ochre, cream, and umber dominate the palette, set off by the sharp yellow-and-white stripes of the shirt and denim blue of the overalls. Brushwork is broad and confident, built up alla prima with thicker paint on the sleeves and boots, while the face is more tightly modeled than the loose surrounding clutter, giving the scene an intimate, unguarded workshop feel.
