About this work

Three tall yellow pears rise at the center of a shallow white bowl with a blue rim, flanked by a red apple, a small pomegranate and trailing bunches of green grapes with curling tendrils and dried stems. The bowl sits on a table whose front edge is covered by a red, blue and gold geometric carpet, its patterned border running the width of the canvas.

Set against a plain, softly textured pale wall, the fruit is painted with smooth, closely observed modeling that captures the pears' waxy sheen, the grapes' translucency and the apple's blush. Warm yellows and reds stand out against the cooler background, while the carpet's dense ornament adds a decorative counterpoint beneath the simply arranged fruit.
