About this work
Bare, spindly trees rise along a snow-covered embankment in the left foreground, their branches silhouetted against a pale sky; a low, three-arched stone bridge spans the river in the middle distance, with a slender spire barely visible through the haze and a row of snow-capped apartment buildings closing the view on the right.
Painted almost entirely in whites, grays, and soft ochres with broken, feathery brushstrokes, the scene dissolves fog, snow, and sky into one another; the diffuse light and hushed, empty embankment give the picture a quiet, melancholic stillness typical of a winter thaw.
