About this work
Four separate wooden panels, joined by small metal rings, each show a single haloed, winged creature set against a diamond-checkered background: a robed human figure holding a staff, a striding lion, a rearing winged horse, and a bird-headed figure grasping a cross. Each panel is framed by its own patterned border, and the four are arranged together as a small altarpiece-like grid.
The panels are painted in earthy reds, ochres, teals and touches of gold leaf, with the wood grain left visible beneath thin, worn-looking layers of paint. Flattened forms, heavy outlines and stylized patterning recall old icon painting, giving the set a solemn, symbolic character.
