About this work

A weathered brick building with rows of arched windows and two chimneys is wrapped in an enormous sheet of dark green fabric, its folds knotted and draped diagonally across the facade. The cloth hangs slack in places and taut in others, half concealing the upper floors, while a reddish building stands alongside it under a pale sky.

Muted browns and ochres describe the aged stonework beneath, built up with thick, scumbled brushwork, while the green drape is painted in heavier, fluid strokes that catch a cool light. The contrast between crumbling architecture and taut cloth gives the image an uneasy, muffled quality, as if the building has been shrouded from view.
