About this work
The Ponte Vecchio's tiered buildings, with rows of small shuttered windows and a covered upper corridor, span the width of the canvas above two stone arches reflected in the river below. Wooden supports and a few tiny figures under the arcade suggest everyday activity along the bridge, while the riverbank fades into soft, unfocused distance at either side.
Warm ochre and gold tones cover the sunlit facades, contrasted with the cool, dark green-grey of the still water beneath, which mirrors the architecture in soft, broken reflections. Loose, confident brushstrokes and a harmonious, limited palette give the scene a tranquil, sun-warmed calm.
