About this work
In a rocky desert dotted with cacti and aloe, a woman wrapped in blue and orange cloth nurses an infant at the center of the scene. Beside her, a man in a dark coat and striped scarf holds a staff; to the right, a winged figure in a pink robe looks down, hand to her face. A golden hourglass and small stone well stand between them, with a distant figure walking toward the hills.
Warm desert tans set off the saturated pink, orange, and blue draperies of the three figures, painted with smooth, careful modeling in a traditional manner. Clear light and the symmetrical arrangement around the hourglass give the scene a solemn, enigmatic quality.
