About this work
Seven large fish, rendered in fine silvery detail, appear to swim through open air over a crowded row of tiled roofs, towers and pagoda-like buildings. White birds with outstretched wings dart between the fish at several points in the composition, while lit windows and small figures glow faintly among the dark rooftops below.
The scene is worked almost entirely in silvery greys and blacks against deep black grounds, with fine hatching and stippled lines describing scales, feathers and roof tiles in intricate detail. The contrast between the luminous fish and birds and the surrounding darkness gives the image a strange, dreamlike, almost nocturnal quality.
