About this work
A round masonry stove dominates the composition, its lower body freshly whitewashed while the upper section is blackened with soot and grime. The small square firebox door stands open, revealing grey ash inside; beside the stove a slender iron poker leans in a metal pail, and a scrap of paper lies discarded on the wooden floor.
Dark browns, charcoal grey and chalky white are built up in dry, scumbled strokes that mimic the stove's rough, scorched surface. Even, shadowless light keeps the mood subdued and quiet, the cold firebox and single poker giving the corner a still, slightly forlorn air of a fire recently gone out.
