About this work

A row of ornate St Petersburg-style buildings — a pale grey house, a taller pink-columned facade with a pediment, and a golden-ochre corner building — lines the far bank of a canal. Along the near shore, several small boats and barges are moored close together, their masts and dark hulls doubled in the still water below.

A soft grey-blue evening sky diffuses light evenly over the scene, warming the pink and ochre stone while cooling the shadows beneath. Quick, broken strokes suggest window mouldings, rigging and reflections without fine detail, giving the view an easy, atmospheric calm typical of a plein-air city sketch.
