About this work
A row of bare, slender trees lines both banks of a straight canal, their trunks and branches doubled in a still reflection below. Ochre and rose apartment buildings recede along the left bank while, on the right, facades catch a warm glow from a low sun; a stone parapet and lamp posts run along the water's edge toward a distant bridge.
Cool greys and blue-greens dominate the sky and water, set against pockets of warm orange and pink where the low light strikes the buildings and tree trunks. Paint is applied in thick, textured strokes with a palette knife, especially in the reflections, where color is dragged and layered rather than blended smooth. The mood is quiet and still, a hushed pause at the close of the day.
