About this work
A dense cluster of terracotta-roofed buildings fills the frame from an elevated viewpoint, rooftops and walls overlapping toward the middle distance. A tall campanile and a domed church rise above the rest of the town near the center of the composition, softened by atmospheric haze, with the pale sky above showing no figures.
Warm rust, ochre and rose tones cover the rooftops, dissolving into cooler grey-lavender toward the horizon and sky. Thick, textured brushwork built up with a loose, almost knife-worked touch gives the townscape an impressionistic softness, evoking a quiet, slightly melancholic evening hush.
