About this work

A narrow street runs straight back between tall buildings whose facades crowd the frame on either side, converging toward a glowing patch of sky at the far end. Wet cobblestones mirror scattered lights and the warm haze above, while a single car is parked along the left curb and pinpoints of gold flicker from windows and doorways in the shadowed lower storeys.

The palette moves from smoky charcoal and rust in the foreground buildings to soft peach, lilac and cream overhead, applied in thick, scraped ridges of paint that catch real light across the canvas surface. Rain-slicked reflections are built from broken strokes of ochre and white, giving the empty street a hushed, glowing stillness after the storm has passed.
