About this work
A woman is wrapped to the chin in a heavy olive-green coat with a thick fur collar and matching fur hat, small pink flowers pinned to the fabric. She sits with one gloved hand near her lap, head turned slightly to meet the viewer's gaze against a plain wall, the edge of a picture frame visible at the corner.
The coat and fur are built up with thick, broken strokes of olive, umber, and warm white, left deliberately loose and unfinished at the edges, while the face is modeled more smoothly in soft pink and ochre flesh tones. Small dabs of crimson against the coat provide the only bright accent, and the overall effect is quiet, reserved, and wintry.
