About this work

A low, dark row of waterfront buildings with snow-capped roofs stretches across the middle distance, with two tall masts or antennae rising above the rooftops against the sky. The foreground is a broad expanse of pale, textured ice or snow-covered water, and a heavy bank of grey-white clouds fills most of the sky above.

Applied in thick, dragged strokes of blue-grey, ochre and white, the oil paint builds a rough, tactile surface that conveys cold, overcast light. The muted, close-toned palette and coarse brushwork give the winter view a quiet, subdued calm.
