About this work

A brightly patterned carpet with red, blue and gold geometric medallions drapes over the front edge of a table; behind it stand a large green-patinated copper ewer with a long curved spout, a blue-and-white ceramic flask, a small pewter creamer, a tall empty glass and a single pomegranate resting against the ewer's base.

Painted against a plain charcoal-grey backdrop, the objects are rendered in tight, glassy detail: the metal's verdigris and dents, the porcelain's cobalt florals, the glass's transparency, while raking side light picks out sharp highlights and long shadows. The dense, tapestry-like carpet pattern contrasts with the smooth, softly modeled vessels, giving the still life a hushed, contemplative stillness.
