About this work
Slender pine trunks rise against a broad sky filled with drifting white clouds, with a dense line of dark spruce and birch along the horizon. In the foreground, young evergreen saplings and patches of last year's dry golden grass cover the ground, with a fallen log lying among them and a path opening at the left edge.
Cool blue-grey sky tones contrast with the warm ochre of the grass, painted in short, dry pastel strokes that leave the paper's texture visible. Tree trunks and foliage are built with quick vertical and diagonal marks, giving the whole scene a fresh, airy feel of early spring before new leaves appear.
