About this work
A single cloth is spread and rumpled across the composition, its corners pulling into pointed creases at top and bottom while a smooth, rounded passage of lighter tone sits at the center of the folds. No figure or object is shown beneath the fabric; the drapery alone fills the frame against a flat black background.
Charcoal is built from soft, evenly blended greys in the illuminated center to darker, more broken strokes at the torn and creased edges. The pale glowing center amid the dark folds gives the drawing an ambiguous, mask-like suggestion, producing a hushed, mysterious mood.
