About this work

A row of ornate domed and pedimented buildings lines the far bank of the Elbe, their facades softened by distance. Below, several steamboats and barges are moored along the quay, one venting a plume of white smoke, while the river's calm surface mirrors the hulls, funnels and architecture above in broken reflections.

Cool greys and blues dominate the sky and water, set against warm ochre stonework on the buildings. Overcast light keeps contrasts gentle, and the water is rendered with broad, dragged strokes that blur reflections into soft vertical smears, lending the harbor scene a quiet, settled calm.
