About this work
Viewed from behind, a standing figure is draped from crown to ankle in a single sheet that clings over the head like a hood and falls in long vertical folds past the shoulders, hips, and legs. The fabric closely follows the contours of the body underneath, suggesting rounded shoulders and hips, while the feet remain hidden in loose gathered cloth pooling at the base.
Charcoal is built up in smooth graduated tones on black paper, with raking light striking the upper back and hips and fading into deep shadow along the sides. Long unbroken folds create a sense of stillness and quiet movement, and the featureless, hooded head lends the drawing a solemn, mysterious presence.
