About this work
The composition is cropped tightly around a man's head and upper chest, his face lowered and eyes shadowed beneath a crown of woven thorns. Pale, lighter drapery falls from the shoulders on either side, framing the head like wings, while everything beyond the figure dissolves into black. No cross or landscape is shown - the image concentrates entirely on the suffering expression of the crowned head.
Deep browns, ochres, and near-black tones dominate, with the thorns and cheekbones caught in scraped, dragged highlights that read almost like relief carving. The paint is applied thickly and abraded in places, leaving a rough, weathered surface that suits the somber subject. Little separates figure from ground, and the effect is heavy, brooding, and starkly devotional.
