About this work
A young woman with braided auburn hair bound in a beaded circlet holds a pale, weasel-like ermine against her chest, one hand supporting its body, in a pose echoing Leonardo da Vinci's celebrated portrait. She wears a patchwork of red, blue and richly patterned sleeves and a beaded necklace. Beside her, carved into a stone wall, is a relief bust of an elderly bearded man, with faint arcaded ruins receding on the left.
Muted golds, ochres and earth tones dominate, broken by patches of cobalt blue and deep red in the sleeves. Every surface, skin, fabric, stone and fur, is worked in the same dense, engraved-looking texture, flattening depth into overall decoration. The effect is contemplative and slightly enigmatic, reworking a recognizable earlier portrait into new, mosaic-like imagery.
