About this work
Massive white columns of a covered portico dominate the right side of the composition, framing a view across a plaza toward a domed cathedral with a smaller golden cupola beside it. Bare, leafless trees stand on the left, and a few pedestrians and parked cars are sketched in small strokes along the roadway below.
Cool greys and lavenders describe the overcast sky and pale stone, while the gilded dome glows warm against them in thick, buttery highlights. Crisp architectural drawing in the columns contrasts with looser, calligraphic strokes for the bare branches, lending the view a hushed, wintry stillness.
