About this work
Countless slender towers, bulbous domes, spires, and gabled roofs crowd shoulder to shoulder across the entire canvas, forming an impossibly dense imaginary skyline with no ground or figures visible; narrow lit windows and archways puncture the facades, and the buildings climb in tiers toward a pale, hazy upper register.
The surface is built from tiny granular dabs of ochre, sienna, cobalt, and crimson over a warm sandy ground, giving the whole scene a mosaic-like, encrusted texture; the crowded, glowing composition feels dreamlike, like a city remembered rather than observed.
