About this work
The etching isolates a single head in profile, drawn from a classical or Renaissance sculpture, with deep-set eyes, a strong nose, furrowed brow, and thick curling hair rendered in loose, energetic strokes. Below the image, the word "Michelangelo" is written in a flowing cursive hand, with a small exlibris mark in the corner.
The face is built from fine, controlled crosshatching that models the planes of cheek, brow, and jaw, while the hair is left looser and more gestural, setting worked passages against unworked paper. The restrained black ink on cream paper and careful modeling give the study a quiet, contemplative, academic character.
