About this work
A whitewashed church with a cluster of dark bulbous domes and gilded crosses stands at the center of the composition, its bell tower topped by a slender green tented roof to the left. Further blue domes glint among trees at the right edge, while a small figure with an umbrella crosses the grassy foreground scattered with wildflowers.
Loose, thickly loaded strokes build the church walls in white and pale grey against a pearly, cloud-filled sky, with touches of ochre and rose in the flowerbeds below. The impressionistic handling and soft daylight give the scene a quiet, unhurried calm typical of a plein-air study.
