About this work
Pale yellow pears are piled on a pink plate at the center and clustered again in a shallow bowl at lower right, while a curling shell sits among them; at upper right the soft outline of a child-like, angelic face looks down over the scene. The objects are arranged loosely across a pale, rumpled surface with no hard edges between them.
Muted greys, pale greens and dusty pinks are built up with thick, dragged strokes of paint that blur individual forms into a soft, atmospheric haze. Diffuse light gives no strong shadows, and the smudged, dreamlike handling turns an ordinary fruit still life into something gentle and quietly festive.
