About this work

A conductor in white-tie evening dress stands with baton raised in one hand, his body turned toward the viewer while his gaze looks past the frame. Behind him to the left a cellist, seen from the side, draws a bow across the strings, and faint marks at lower right suggest music stands or an audience in the shadowed hall.

The entire canvas is drenched in deep indigo and cobalt blue, with only the conductor's shirt front and cuffs picked out in pale highlights that catch what little light there is. Loose, economical brushwork dissolves the background into darkness, concentrating attention on the conductor's tense hands and focused expression, and lending the scene a hushed, dramatic intensity.
