About this work
Three male figures stand against a bare, pale ground, built almost entirely from grey and black washes. A boy with a shaved head stands closest to the viewer, hands clasped behind his back, staring out with a guarded expression. Behind him a heavier man in a dark coat carries a black sack over one shoulder, smiling, while a third man in a cap holds something to his lips.
The composition reads almost as a tonal sketch in smoky greys and blacks, built from broad, dragged strokes with drips left visible rather than blended away. Faces and hands carry more finish than the loosely brushed coats and background, giving the group a rough, unsettled presence suited to its confrontational title.
