Challenge to fight. Series "Shrovetide"

Three men stand shoulder to shoulder in a shallow, undefined space rendered almost entirely in black, white and grey. The central figure, in a dark shirt, faces the viewer directly with a level gaze, while the man to his left leans in with mouth open as if shouting, and the man on the right stands wrapped in a heavy coat, his form dissolving into the pale background.

Charcoal-like drips and smeared, dry brushstrokes build the figures out of the ground rather than filling in outlines, leaving edges ragged and unfinished. The nearly monochromatic palette, broken only by faint ochre in the skin, and the raw, unresolved handling give the group a tense, confrontational charge.
