Celestial battle

Two winged figures occupy the upper register of the canvas - one draws back a bow, the other looks down with raised hands - while below them a man in a yellow-green robe braces a long spear against an unseen threat. Beneath this aerial struggle a walled city with towers and a river is glimpsed through smoke, and further down bodies with straining arms and a dark animal head crowd the lower edge of the picture.

A near-nocturnal palette of deep blues, blacks, and muted gold dominates, with sharp white highlights on the wings and drapery cutting through the gloom. Forms are simplified and angular, brushwork rough and urgent, building a tense, apocalyptic mood of combat unfolding between sky and earth.
