About this work
A hillside townscape rises in tiers from the water's edge, its ochre and cream buildings clustered beneath the white turrets and slender spire of a Gothic-revival church and fortified terrace. Bare trees and rooftops crowd the middle ground while a broad, still river fills the foreground, its pale surface broken by a few moored boats along a low embankment.
Muted greys, warm ochres and soft greens are laid in loose, economical strokes, with the sky rendered as a flat, overcast wash that flattens the distance between hill and river. The brushwork stays broad and descriptive rather than detailed, giving the view a hushed, quietly observed atmosphere typical of a plein-air riverside study.
