Breakfast on the Grass 2012

Under boughs of an apple tree hung with ripe red fruit, a still life is arranged on the ground: a wicker basket of apples, a dark glass bottle, a green jug holding a small bunch of white and yellow wildflowers, a brass samovar topped with a blue-and-white teapot, a white enamel mug, and a blue-handled enamel frying pan set on a red floral cloth over pale linen.

Warm browns and golds of the samovar and basket sit against saturated greens and reds of the orchard and cloth, painted in broad, energetic strokes. Bright dappled light filtering through the leaves gives the outdoor gathering of objects a relaxed, rustic charm.
