About this work
A powerful grey horse rears up on its hind legs, front legs braced against a stone column, inside a cavernous arched hall lined with classical columns and rounded arcades. The architecture recedes into shadow behind the animal, with glimpses of tiled roofs and window openings visible through the far archway, framing the horse as the sole focus of the composition.
The horse's dappled coat is rendered in close, silvery greys and soft whites against the warm ochre and umber tones of the stone interior, with the mane and tail left looser and darker for contrast. Light falls from the front, modeling the muscles of the chest and haunches with careful realism while the background stays broad and shadowed. The pose reads as forceful and dramatic.
