About this work
A weathered wooden house with pale, frost-tinged walls occupies the left foreground of a snow-covered riverside village. A bundled figure carrying a long rod over one shoulder trudges along the bank toward a wooden footbridge, while a small boat with a rower moves across the dark open water. Snow-dusted rooftops and a distant church dome cluster on the far hillside, framed by a bare birch.
Cool blue-grey shadows on the snow contrast with warm ochre wood and patches of clear winter light, applied in broad, confident strokes. The unfrozen river reads as near-black beside the surrounding white, and the loose, sketch-like handling of snow, wood grain and distant houses gives the scene a crisp, bracing winter stillness.
