About this work
An arched gateway opens into a blue-lit interior at the center of a shadowed courtyard wall. Warm ochre and brown stonework surrounds the passage, with an ornate iron bracket and shuttered doorway to the left where two small orange embers glow faintly. A single street lamp mounted on the wall casts its white glow across the stone above the gate.
Warm ochre, sienna and near-black browns dominate the walls, set against the cool electric blue seen through the doorway. Thick, dry-brushed strokes build the rough plaster surface, while the lamp's glass is rendered with soft blooming highlights. The contrast of warm lamplight against the cold blue beyond gives the scene a hushed, secretive night atmosphere.
