About this work

A large horse-cart is transformed into the body of a fish, its scaled sides made from overlapping strips of red, orange and violet fabric wrapped in netting and topped with an oversized tail fin. The cart bed is heaped with apples, pears and other produce, riding on two spoked wooden wheels, while a small church and cluster of houses appear between them in the distance. Two birds perch on the fish's raised head, and mounds of pumpkins fill the foreground beneath a pale moon in a mottled, cloud-streaked sky.

The palette moves from cool grey-white sky to warm oranges, reds and violets across the fish's body, echoed in the ochre of the wheels and muted greens and pinks of the pumpkins below. Paint is applied in small dabs and patterned strokes that read as textile or scale-like ornament rather than realistic surface, giving the scene a flattened, folk-tale decorativeness and a playful, story-like effect.
