About this work
Rows of stone, dragon-headed giants stretch across the upper half of the canvas like a mountain ridge, their carved faces and claws looming over a rainbow that curves down into the scene below. Beneath it, several women in mosaic, harlequin-patterned garments cluster together, one bare-shouldered figure holding a flower, with a nude infant and a winged, haloed angel gathered at the lower right beside a small domed church.
The palette shifts from cool green sky and stone grays above to warm pastel patchwork tones below, with every costume and wing built from small triangular facets of color. Thick, encrusted paint gives the rock giants a heavy, sculptural weight, while the delicate patterning of the lower figures creates a dense, dreamlike contrast between menace and fragile ornament.
