About this work

A narrow river curves from the foreground into the distance, flanked by dense trees and shrubs in turning autumn foliage on both banks. Beyond the treeline a wide hazy expanse of water or plain opens out, with a few small rooftops and a thin plume of smoke visible on the far horizon under a pale sky.

Warm golds, ochres, and deep greens are built up in thick, textured strokes across the foliage, set against cooler, softly blurred distance and reflections in the water below. The layered brushwork and receding haze give the view a quiet, slightly melancholic autumn calm.
