About this work
The ballerina is shown from the chest up, chin raised and eyes lifted upward past the viewer, hair drawn back into a low ponytail with a small stud earring. She wears a sheer, faintly patterned pale top over her shoulders, its lace-like texture only loosely indicated. The background is left largely bare, with soft grey washes brushed in around her head and shoulder.
The mixed technique combines watercolor washes with fine colored-pencil linework, leaving parts of the paper untouched for a sense of unfinished immediacy. Cool greys surround warm flesh tones built up with careful cross-hatching on the face. The looser handling and upward gaze give the sketch a searching, contemplative air compared to a finished portrait.
