About this work
A stone staircase with globe-topped balustrades ascends a grassy hillside beneath a gnarled, leafless tree leaning in from the left. At the top of the slope a small dark silhouette stands against the sky, while the steps disappear upward into swirling clouds; a narrow band of warm light glows along the horizon at lower right.
Charcoal-grey and near-black tones envelop the hill and stonework, broken by a pale crescent moon glimpsed through a gap in turbulent, wind-blown clouds. Loose, sweeping brushwork animates the sky while the stair treads and stone spheres are rendered with heavier, textured strokes, producing a dramatic atmosphere of ascent into storm and light.
