About this work
A calm lake fills the lower half of the canvas, its blue-violet water framed by a pale sandy shore. Tall thin pines and birches cluster on the near bank, silhouetted against the water, while a hazy line of forest, tinged with autumn rust, rings the far shore. Above, banked white clouds fill most of the pale blue sky.
Cool blues and violets in the water and sky give way to warmer olive and rust greens along the distant treeline. Paint is laid in broad, loaded strokes with visible brush and knife marks, especially in the clouds and foliage. The effect is quiet and open-air, a fleeting impression of still water under shifting light.
