About this work
A round fortress tower topped with a green dome anchors the composition, flanked by a squat white turret and a red-roofed building along a stone embankment. Autumn-toned trees with yellow and rust foliage line the shore, and the entire cluster of towers and rooftops is mirrored, softly distorted, in the still river below.
The palette moves between cool blue-grey and warm ochre, built up in thick, plaster-like impasto with passages of silver leaf glinting through the sky and water. Scraped, weathered textures give the surface an aged, crumbling quality, producing a quiet, melancholic sense of a fortress town settling into autumn.
