About this work
A young woman lies curled on her side in tall grass, knees drawn up and hands tucked near her chin, asleep. A red cloth bunched beneath her head and shoulder sets off her dark blue top and black trousers. A woven basket half-filled with small mushrooms rests near her folded hands, while more mushrooms are scattered through the grass and cluster at the base of a birch trunk to the right.
Warm browns and dull greens of the woodland floor surround the figure, set against the saturated red beneath her head and the blue of her top. Forms are softly modelled with smoothly blended brushwork, and a gentle, even light falls across the sleeping figure. The quiet pose and muted setting give the scene a hushed, dreamy stillness, as if she has paused mid-errand to rest.
