About this work
Two figures recline low on the ground, one facing the viewer at left, the other seen from behind at right, her head turned in profile. Both rest on bent arms in relaxed, informal poses, close together as if pausing between exercises. The horizon is kept low, with a warm glowing field filling the upper half of the canvas behind them.
The figures are modeled almost entirely in cool blues and pale whites, their forms loosely brushed and left soft at the edges, while the backdrop glows in warm apricot and ochre like stage light. The contrast between the warm ground and cool bodies creates a hazy, tranquil pause, the loose brushwork lending the scene an unguarded, restful quality.
