About this work
A single-storey white cottage with a steep, snow-capped roof and a rust-coloured brick chimney stands at the centre of a snowbound village lane. A leafless tree with reddish branches grows close against its wall, and a low outbuilding with a red door adjoins it on the left. Deep drifts and a rutted road fill the foreground, with houses fading into haze beyond.
The palette is built from cool whites, powder blues and lilac shadows, warmed by touches of ochre and rust on the chimney, tree and eaves. Sunlight rakes low across the scene, throwing long blue shadows over the crusted snow and giving the surface a crisp quality. Soft pastel strokes blur edges enough to suggest cold, still winter air.
