About this work
Two women recline across the canvas at opposing angles, bodies crossing near the center. The upper figure lies bare-chested with a pearl necklace and an open pink wrap, cradling a green apple; the lower figure, seen upside down relative to her, wears a white ruffled skirt and a red top, one arm raised past her head. They rest on rumpled orange, white, and violet fabric against a deep blue ground.
Skin tones are modeled smoothly in warm ochre and rose against saturated, broadly brushed ultramarine, orange, and lilac drapery. Light sharpens at the apple held at the center, while the folded cloth is rendered in loose, confident strokes. The color contrasts and interlocking poses give the scene a theatrical charge.
