About this work
A rough, mottled mask resembling carved stone or bronze shows a man's face with a headband of small curls or ringlets and thick coiled locks framing the cheeks, damaged and pitted across the surface. It sits centered on a flat panel patterned with an ornamental scrolling border in burnt orange and blue-grey, echoing a decorative frame or antique architectural fragment.
The mask itself is modeled in soft greys, browns and dusty pinks with a mottled, weathered texture, while the surrounding border is painted flatter and more graphically in strong orange and blue-grey tones with repeating scroll motifs. The contrast between the sculptural, shadowed face and the flat decorative pattern gives the work a stylized, ornamental, slightly aged character.
